Isaac Newton (1642–1727) was a renowned English polymath, serving as the Lucasian Professor of Mathematics at Trinity College, University of Cambridge, from 1669. He held pivotal roles, including Master of the Mint (1699–1727), President of the Royal Society (1703–1727), and was knighted in 1705. Educated at Trinity College, he earned a BA (1665) and MA (1668).
His research spanned physics, mathematics, optics, and natural philosophy. Key contributions include the laws of motion, universal gravitation (Principia, 1687), calculus, and the corpuscular theory of light (Opticks, 1704). He also engaged in alchemy and theology, though these remained unpublished during his lifetime.
Notable accolades include the Knight Bachelor and Fellowship of the Royal Society (1672). Newton advised students like Roger Cotes and William Whiston. His tenure at the Mint reformed British coinage, and his presidency of the Royal Society bolstered its prestige. Though reclusive and contentious, his legacy endures as a cornerstone of scientific inquiry.
