Roger G. Harrison is the David Ross Boyd Professor of Chemical Engineering at the University of Oklahoma, specializing in applying biotechnology to medical challenges. His research focuses on targeted cancer therapies, bionanotechnology, and recombinant protein engineering. He leads the Sustainable Chemical, Biological and Materials Engineering department and has pioneered the NusA fusion protein system for soluble recombinant protein expression.
- Education: Ph.D. (1975) and M.S. (1968) from University of Wisconsin-Madison; B.S. (1967) from University of Oklahoma
- Notable roles: Senior Research Engineer at Phillips Petroleum (1981-88), Visiting Professor at Blaise Pascal University (1997)
Research emphasizes targeted therapies using carbon nanotubes, protein-drug conjugates, and enzyme prodrug systems. Key innovations include SWNT-mediated photothermal therapy and annexin-based targeting for tumors and pathogens. His work has demonstrated up to 10,000x antibiotic efficacy against E. coli and Listeria monocytogenes.
- Major awards: Fellow of AIChE (2018), Fellow of AIMBE (2017), Oklahoma Higher Education Hall of Fame (2017)
- Textbook: "Bioseparations Science and Engineering" (2nd ed., 2015)
Current projects include anti-malaria enzyme conjugates and combination therapies for ovarian and bladder cancers. His lab works closely with industry partners and has licensed technologies for research applications.
