He has been instrumental in promoting collaborations between these fields, reflecting his dual appointments and leadership in institutions like the Observatoire Astronomique de Marseille Provence and the Mediterranean Institute for Advanced Study (IMERA).
He previously served as director of the Observatoire Astronomique de Marseille Provence and contributed to its observational cosmology group. Malina also played a key role in establishing IMERA, which emphasizes the human dimensions of science through trans-disciplinary research.
At UC Berkeley, he led NASA's Extreme Ultraviolet Explorer satellite team, which pioneered orbiting observatories in the extreme ultraviolet band and university-led NASA satellite operations.
