Roger Azevedo is a Pegasus Professor and Director of the SMART Lab at the University of Central Florida’s School of Modeling Simulation and Training. He holds affiliated faculty appointments in the Departments of Computer Science and Internal Medicine, leading interdisciplinary research at the intersection of cognitive psychology, educational technology, and artificial intelligence.

His research focuses on self-regulated learning, metacognition, and human-AI collaboration in advanced learning systems. He designs intelligent tutoring systems (e.g., MetaTutor), immersive virtual environments, and multimodal data frameworks to model cognitive, emotional, and motivational processes during learning. Current projects explore digital twins, pedagogical agents, and human-machine symbiosis across domains like healthcare and STEM education.
Roger Azevedo has received accolades including the NSF Early Faculty Career Award, the AERA Barry J. Zimmerman Award, and recognition in the Top 2% of Researchers in PLOS Biology. His work is supported by grants from the NSF, NIH, IES, and international councils.
