Rogelio Saenz, Ph.D., is a Professor of Sociology and Demography at the University of Texas at San Antonio (UTSA), affiliated with the College for Health, Community and Policy (HCAP). His research focuses on demography, minority groups, inequality, Latina/o sociology, immigration, and social justice. He holds a Ph.D. and M.S. in Sociology from Iowa State University and a B.S.W. in Social Work from Pan American University.
Key research interests include analyzing demographic trends impacting marginalized communities, particularly Latino populations, and the intersection of race, ethnicity, and public policy. His work explores topics such as the Latino mortality paradox, census data discontinuity, and electoral demographics. Recent presentations include discussions on aging populations, immigration policy, and demographic shifts in Texas and across the U.S.
Dr. Saenz has been awarded prestigious honors including the 2023 Cox-Johnson-Frazier Award from the American Academy of Political and Social Science and the 2017 Joseph B. Gittler Award from the Society for the Study of Social Problems. His grants total over $5 million, focusing on diversity in higher education, health equity, and community development. Notable projects include studies on the Status of Women in San Antonio and the demographic impacts of the 2020 U.S. Census changes.
