Roddy Hawkins is a Lecturer in Music at the University of Manchester, affiliated with the School of Arts and Humanities and the Department of Music. His research explores the social and cultural history of British music since 1970, focusing on boundaries in musical production, dissemination, and historiography. He founded the 'States of Flux' research group and co-organized symposia on British avant-garde and popular music.

His research interests span New Complexity, hermeneutics, marginality, music notation, contemporary ensembles, British music, and intersections between music and politics. Recent work includes a monograph on New Complexity in 1980s Britain and a special issue on contemporary music ensembles. His scholarship interrogates canonization, labor dynamics, and aesthetic discourses.
Current projects bridge academic and non-academic collaborations, including roles with the Greater Manchester Music Hub and Creative Manchester. He also serves on the MusicHE committee and contributes to the British Pop Archive.
