Professor Robert Adlington serves as Head of Research and Professor of Musicology at the Royal College of Music (RCM). His research focuses on modernist, avant-garde, and experimental music since 1960, with particular attention to the intersection of music with political and democratic concepts. He has authored influential books such as *Musical Models of Democracy* (2023), which explores how musicians embody democratic principles, and edited volumes on new music theatre and music and communism.
Prior roles include Deputy Chair of Sub-panel 33 (Music, Drama, Dance, the Performing Arts, Film and Screen Studies) for the Research Excellence Framework (REF2021) and the Queen’s Anniversary Prize Chair in Contemporary Music at the University of Huddersfield. He has held various leadership positions at the University of Nottingham, including Director of Research.
Adlington’s research interests span musical modernism, temporal structures, and the political dimensions of avant-garde practices. His editorial roles include positions with *Music Analysis* and *Twentieth-Century Music*. He supervises doctoral students like Kate Stringer and Lukas Hoevelmann-Koeper, whose work intersects with performance, philosophy, and musicology.
