Rod Weilbaecher is a Research Assistant Professor at the Department of Biochemistry and Molecular Biology within Southern Illinois University School of Medicine. He earned his Ph.D. from the University of California at Berkeley and his A.B. from Washington University in St. Louis. Prior to joining SIUC in December 2007, he completed postdoctoral training at the University of Texas - M.D. Anderson Cancer Center and Baylor College of Medicine.

Rod focuses on telomere biology, investigating the molecular mechanisms of telomere protection, replication, and regulation. His work emphasizes the roles of telomere-binding proteins and chromatin-modifying complexes like Set1 methyltransferase in telomerase activity and telomere length homeostasis. This research has implications for understanding cellular aging, cancer progression, and therapeutic targets.
His publications highlight studies on yeast model systems, including the identification of telomerase subunits (e.g., Est3), DNA-binding domains (e.g., Cdc13), and proteins involved in telomere structure (e.g., Stm1p). These works often explore interactions between telomeres, ribosomes, and transcriptional repression in heterochromatin regions.
