Rod Hunt is a Professor in the Department of Paediatrics within the Faculty of Medicine, Nursing and Health Sciences at Monash University, and a Clinician Scientist at Monash Health’s Newborn Intensive Care Unit. He is actively engaged in research, supervision, and clinical leadership, with a focus on improving outcomes for preterm infants.
- PhD in Medicine, University of Melbourne (2007)
- Master of Medicine in Clinical Epidemiology, University of Sydney (2004)
His research centers on neonatal neurology, neuroimaging, and neurodevelopment, particularly the mechanisms of perinatal brain injury and neuroprotection. His work aims to reduce cerebral palsy and developmental impairments in very preterm infants. He employs advanced neuroimaging, clinical epidemiology, and data science to investigate early biomarkers and long-term outcomes.
The recent publications reflect a strong trend in understanding neurodevelopmental impacts of maternal and neonatal conditions (e.g., SARS-CoV-2, inflammation), predictive modeling of outcomes, and novel therapeutics. His work spans clinical studies, systematic reviews, and large collaborative projects leveraging electronic health records and longitudinal surveillance.
- Director of Research, Cerebral Palsy Alliance (2020–present)
- Chair, Neonatal Sub-committee, Consultative Council on Obstetric and Paediatric Mortality and Morbidity (Victoria) (2018–present)
He leads multiple funded research projects, including as Primary Chief Investigator on the 'BLUEPRINT' and 'TARGETED SURVEILLANCE' studies, and contributes as Chief or Associate Investigator on initiatives in maternal-fetal health and data-driven care improvement. He is accepting PhD students and advises on neonatal neurodevelopmental research.
Rod Hunt is affiliated with research networks focused on neonatal brain injury, cerebral palsy, and neurodevelopment, collaborating with national and international experts in neonatology, neurology, and data science.
