Rockford Weitz is a Professor of the Practice in Maritime Studies and Director of the Fletcher Maritime Studies Program at The Fletcher School of Law and Diplomacy, Tufts University. He concurrently serves as President of the Institute for Global Maritime Studies Inc., a non-profit addressing global maritime challenges, and President & CEO of Rhumb Line International LLC, a strategic consultancy. His expertise spans global maritime affairs, security, Arctic studies, entrepreneurship, leadership, and technology.
Education: PhD (2008), MA (2003) from The Fletcher School, Tufts University; JD (2003) from Harvard Law School; BA (1999) from College of William & Mary.
Research: Focuses on maritime security dynamics, strategic chokepoints (e.g., Strait of Hormuz), Arctic navigation, and innovation-driven solutions to maritime challenges. Recent work emphasizes geopolitical implications of energy transit routes and sustainable shipping practices.
Awards & Affiliations: Fellow in the U.S.-Japan Leadership Program; Member of the Council on Foreign Relations; Member of the Fletcher School's Advancement Council. Holds FINRA Series 3 certification.
Grants & Activities: Led the Smith Richardson Foundation-funded Maritime Security Initiative (2017–2019). Advisory roles include FinTech Sandbox Inc., CargoMetrics, and Sustainable Agriculture for All Inc. Taught courses on maritime security, jurisprudence, and entrepreneurship.
