Professor Sir Robin Murray is a leading Professor of Psychiatric Research at the Psychosis Studies department within the Institute of Psychiatry, Psychology & Neuroscience at King's College London, affiliated with the NIHR Maudsley Biomedical Research Centre. He provides clinical care at the National Psychosis Unit of the South London and Maudsley NHS Trust, which serves patients with psychotic illnesses from across the UK.
His educational background includes:
- Doctor of Science in Research in Schizophrenia from University of London (1988)

- Doctor of Medicine in Analgesic Nephropathy from University of Glasgow (1974)

Professor Murray's research primarily focuses on schizophrenia and bipolar disorder, with significant contributions to understanding the relationship between cannabis use and psychosis, genetic and environmental risk factors, cognitive functioning in psychotic disorders, and novel treatment approaches. His work spans clinical research, epidemiological studies, and biological investigations into the mechanisms underlying psychotic illnesses. The fingerprint analysis of his work shows strong concentrations in schizophrenia (100%), cannabis research (52%), bipolar disorder (46%), and psychotic disorders (36%).
Analysis of his recent publications reveals consistent focus on gene-environment interactions in psychosis, particularly examining how cannabis use, childhood trauma, and other environmental factors interact with genetic vulnerability to influence psychosis development and presentation. His research increasingly incorporates biological markers including cortisol measurements and neuroimaging techniques to better understand the pathophysiology of psychotic disorders.
- Knighted (Sir)
Professor Murray has supervised 82 PhD students and 5 MD theses with 100% completion success rate. His extensive research portfolio includes 1484 publications and 198 research projects, currently leading several major initiatives including the Cannabis Clinic for Psychosis intervention study, the INTREPID III international psychosis research program, and the YOUTH GEMs project investigating gene-environment interactions in youth mental health. Major funding comes from organizations including the MRC Medical Research Council, Maudsley Charity, and TSB Technology Strategy Board.
