Robin Grimes is the BCH Steele Chair in Energy Materials and Professor of Materials Physics at the Department of Materials, Faculty of Engineering, Imperial College London. He has held significant non-academic roles, including Ministry of Defence Nuclear Chief Scientific Adviser (2017–2021) and Foreign & Commonwealth Office Chief Scientific Adviser (2013–2018). His research focuses on computer simulation techniques for ceramics and metals, addressing radiation damage, nuclear fuels, and fuel cell materials.
- Education: PhD in Chemistry (Keele University, 1988), MS in Metallurgy and Materials Science (Case Western Reserve University, 1985), BSc in Mathematical Physics (University of Nottingham, 1982).
Research interests include radiation damage modeling, nuclear fuel behavior, and surface structural processes. He has authored over 300 peer-reviewed publications and serves on the editorial board of the Journal of Materials Science.
- Awards: Rosenhain Medal (2002), Griffith Medal (2010), Fellowships of the Royal Society (2018), Royal Academy of Engineering (2013), and Australian Academy of Technology and Engineering (2016).
Advisory roles include leadership of the Imperial Centre for Nuclear Engineering (2008–2013) and the Imperial College Rolls Royce University Technology Centre (2010–2013). He advised the House of Lords on Nuclear Research in 2011.
