Robijn Bruinsma
استاد · Theoretical condensed-matter physics
University of California, Los Angelesمعرفی
Robijn Bruinsma is Professor of Physics at the University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA), where he carries out theoretical and computational research at the intersection of condensed-matter physics and molecular biology.
Education
- Vrije Universiteit, Amsterdam – B.S. in Physics (1974)
- Rijksuniversiteit Utrecht – M.S. in Physics (1976)
- University of Southern California – Ph.D. in Physics (1976)
Research Interests
Professor Bruinsma’s current work applies advanced theoretical physics and large-scale numerical modelling to problems in molecular biology. Major emphases include the numerical simulation of active proteins and of gene transcription, the self-assembly of viruses, the self-assembly and higher-order folding of DNA, chromatin physics, electrostatics and electrical transport along DNA, and the adhesion mechanics of vesicles and living cells.
Publication Trends
Between 1998 and 2002 his group published more than fifty papers in leading journals such as Biophysical Journal, Physical Review Letters and European Physical Journal E. The articles reveal a coherent research program moving from classical soft-matter problems—Langmuir monolayers, membrane elasticity, liquid-crystal polymers—towards quantitative biophysics of DNA, chromatin and molecular motors.
Honours & Awards
- Pierre et Marie Curie Visiting Professorship, ESPCI, Paris (1994)
