Robert P. Watson is a distinguished academic and historian at Lynn University, holding the titles of Avron Fogelman Research Professor and Distinguished Professor of American History within the College of Arts and Sciences. He joined Lynn University in 2007 after teaching at Florida Atlantic University, the University of Hawaii, and other institutions. Watson is renowned for his prolific scholarly output, including over 45 books and 200 articles, with recent works focusing on American presidential history, military conflicts, and public policy. His research has been recognized through prestigious awards like the International Abraham Lincoln Award and the Gold Medal in History.
Education: Watson earned a B.S. in Political Science & Education from Virginia Tech (1985), an M.P.A. in Public Administration from the University of West Florida (1987), and a Ph.D. in Public Policy Analysis from Florida Atlantic University (1991). He completed doctoral coursework in International Relations at Florida State University.
Research focuses on the American presidency, military history (Revolutionary War to Civil War), and civic education. He co-founded Project Civitas to promote political civility and has lectured at historic sites like the Smithsonian Institution, Mount Vernon, and Gettysburg National Battlefield. Watson’s community engagement includes public debates, teacher workshops, and nonprofit leadership in civic education.
Awards include the Children’s Hero Award, League of Women Voters’ Good Government Award, and multiple book accolades. His recent publications analyze Civil War military strategy, early American epidemics, and Washington D.C.’s founding struggles. Watson also contributes to media through interviews on CNN, MSNBC, and PBS, and lectures aboard cruise ships and for the One Day University series.
