Robert W. Boyd is a Professor and Canada Excellence Research Chair Laureate at the University of Ottawa with a joint appointment at the University of Rochester, leading The Boyd Group in cutting-edge photonics research. His work bridges theoretical and experimental optics across both institutions.
His research spans Nonlinear Optics, Quantum Imaging, Slow and Fast Light phenomena, Metamaterials, Photonics, and Optical Physics. He pioneered room-temperature slow light control via coherent population oscillations, quantum imaging techniques, and the development of composite photonic materials with engineered linear and nonlinear optical properties for specialized applications.
Dr. Boyd's exceptional contributions have earned him the highest honors in optics, including:
- Frederic Ives Medal/Jarus W. Quinn Prize (2023) - Optica's highest award
- Frank Isakson Prize (2020) - For breakthroughs in condensed matter optics
- Royal Society of Canada Fellowship (2019) - For fundamental contributions to nonlinear optics
- Heidelberg Academy Corresponding Membership (2018)
- University of Ottawa Research Excellence Award (2018-19)
- Arthur L. Schawlow Prize (2016) and Charles Hard Townes Award (2016)
- IEEE Fellow (2017) and IEEE Quantum Electronics Award (2014)
- Honorary Doctorate from University of Glasgow (2014)
He has mentored over 30 graduate students across PhD and Master's programs while leading a 20+ member international research team. His work is primarily funded through Canada's prestigious CERC grant, driving innovation in quantum photonics. The Boyd Group operates within the Max Planck-uOttawa Centre for Extreme and Quantum Photonics and Nexus for Quantum Technologies, maintaining deep collaborations with the Max Planck Institute for the Science of Light in Germany.
