Robert Boyd is Professor in the School of Electrical Engineering and Computer Science at the Faculty of Engineering, University of Ottawa, where he also holds the Chairholder Physics position. He supervises several doctoral students including Ryan Joseph Hogan, Md Saad-Bin-Alam, and Sisira Sudha Suresh.
His research spans photonics, nonlinear optics, quantum optics, light-matter interactions, and communication technologies. Using advanced metamaterials, epsilon-near-zero (ENZ) platforms, and ultrafast techniques, his group explores fundamental quantum phenomena and develops next-generation devices for imaging, sensing, and quantum networking.
Recent work emphasizes space-compression optics, THz nonlinearities in graphene-metamaterial hybrids, MHz-rate entanglement distribution, and ghost imaging with single-photon cameras. These efforts converge on scalable, high-fidelity photonic systems that operate under real-world constraints such as atmospheric turbulence and scattering media.
Laboratory & Teams: The Boyd Nonlinear Optics Group (web presence currently offline) conducts experimental and theoretical investigations leveraging state-of-the-art nanofabrication, ultrafast lasers, and quantum measurement techniques.
