Nicolas Joly is a Professor and Head of the Microstructured Optical Fibres Independent Research Group at the Max Planck Institute for the Science of Light in Erlangen, Germany. He holds an associate professorship at the University of Erlangen-Nuremberg since 2009. His research focuses on quantum optics, nonlinear optics, and applied photonics, particularly in fiber-based systems.
Education: PhD (2002) and Habilitation (2012) in Physics from the University of Lille, France. Postdoctoral fellowship at the University of Bath (2005–2008) under Prof. Philip Russell. Awards include Fellowships from the Max Planck School of Photonics (2019) and the Optical Society of America (2020).
Research Interests: Generation of non-classical light, supercontinuum generation in photonic crystal fibers, fiber tools for chemical sensing, and levitated particle sensors. Recent work includes quantum entanglement, terahertz detection, and optical trapping in hollow-core fibers.
Grants: Lead investigator on DFG projects including ‘OrbitFlySens’ (2025–2028) and ‘Photon Triplets’ (2024–2027). Collaborations span institutions in France, Canada, and Germany. Supervised 13 PhD students and 14 MSc students.
Awards: Recognized for contributions to nonlinear optics and fiber photonics, including editorial roles at Optics Express and SPIE conferences. Active in international programs like the Max Planck School of Photonics.
