Maj Robert W. Ashby serves as an Instructor of Systems Engineering in the School of Systems and Logistics at the Air Force Institute of Technology (AFIT), Air Education and Training Command, Wright-Patterson Air Force Base, Ohio. In this position, he provides professional continuing education on acquisition and systems engineering topics for Department of the Air Force personnel, with instructional focus areas including risk management and management of systems engineering processes.
Dr. Ashby holds a Bachelor of Science in Aeronautical and Mechanical Engineering from the United States Air Force Academy (2014) and a Master of Science in Aeronautical Engineering from AFIT (2017), where his thesis focused on experimental research in gas turbine engine heat transfer. He also completed Squadron Officer School in 2020.
His research interests span systems engineering, risk management, aeronautical engineering with particular expertise in gas turbine technology, and weapon systems engineering. His background in both academic study and practical application provides a robust foundation for his instructional work in defense acquisition and systems engineering.
Among his recognitions, Maj Ashby has received the Air Force Commendation Medal with oak leaf cluster for his service.

Maj Ashby's military career includes significant leadership roles across multiple Air Force organizations. Prior to his current position, he served as the Officer in Charge of the Intercontinental Ballistic Missile Technical Engineering Minot Operating Location, where he led a team providing round-the-clock engineering support for the Minuteman III weapon system. His earlier assignments included work at the Air Force Research Laboratory in both the Aerospace Vehicles Directorate and Plans & Programs Directorate. He also served on the Wright-Patterson AFB Honor Guard from 2016-2017, rendering military honors for deceased USAF veterans across a six-state region.
His career progression shows steady advancement through the officer ranks, achieving the rank of Major on December 1, 2023, following promotions to Captain in 2018, First Lieutenant in 2016, and commissioning as a Second Lieutenant in 2014 through the United States Air Force Academy.
