Robert Straughan serves as the Crawford Family Dean of the Williams School of Commerce, Economics and Politics at Washington and Lee University. In April 2018, he delivered the keynote address titled "The Urgency of Liberal Arts in the Professions" at the university's Alumni Reunion Weekend Opening Assembly held in Lee Chapel.
Straughan emphasizes the critical connection between liberal arts education and professional fields, particularly business. His academic focus centers on how foundational liberal arts principles enhance professional development. He identifies key learning outcomes essential for undergraduate education including critical and analytical thinking, persuasive communication, moral reasoning, personal empathy, cultural fluency, and creativity and innovation. Straughan contends that specific academic disciplines, whether Latin American literature, classical civilizations, bio-robotics, art preservation, or international marketing, primarily serve as contexts for developing these fundamental skills.
As Dean of the Williams School, Straughan oversees academic programs integrating business, economics, and political studies within a liberal arts framework. His leadership emphasizes the enduring relevance of liberal education in preparing students for professional success across various career paths.
