Robert Stevens is a Professor of English Private Law at the University of Oxford, affiliated with Lady Margaret Hall. He previously held roles as a Professor at University College London (UCL), a Lecturer at the University of Oxford, and a Fellow and Tutor in Law at Lady Margaret Hall (1994–2007). His academic career spans teaching and research in Commercial Law, with global engagements in Commonwealth countries (Australia, Canada) and Europe (Germany, Netherlands, Spain).
Stevens earned his undergraduate law degree and Bachelor of Civil Law (BCL) from the University of Oxford. He was called to the Bar in 1992. His research focuses on Corporate Insolvency, Conflict of Laws, and Restitution. He has authored books such as The Laws of Restitution (OUP, 2023) and Torts and Rights (OUP, 2007), and contributes to interdisciplinary debates on private law theory.
His scholarly work includes analyses of unjust enrichment, contractual obligations, and the intersection of equity and commercial law. Stevens is a key member of the Oxford Private Law Research Group, organizing symposia on restitution and legal theory. His publications span journals like the Law Quarterly Review and European Company and Financial Law Review, with frequent engagements in legal education and scholarly discourse.
