Robert Stanton is an Associate Professor and Director of the M.A. Program in the English Department at Boston College. His research focuses on Old and Middle English language and literature, animal studies, and translation studies. He holds a Ph.D. from the University of Toronto (alongside B.A. and M.A. degrees from the same institution).
Stanton's academic contributions include significant monographs like The Culture of Translation in Anglo-Saxon England (2002) and edited volumes. His scholarship bridges textual analysis with interdisciplinary approaches, particularly in exploring animal symbolism, sound studies, and medieval pedagogy. He has published widely in top journals including postmedieval, Journal of Medieval Religious Cultures, and SMART: Studies in Medieval and Renaissance Teaching.
His work often examines how medieval texts negotiate identity, spirituality, and cultural transmission through language and form. Recent publications analyze animal voices in Old English poetry, mobility in Margery Kempe's writings, and interdisciplinary pedagogical challenges in medieval studies. Stanton actively contributes to academic administration through his directorship role and has reviewed major works in the field for Speculum and Religion and the Arts.
