Robert Smith is a Professor in the Department of History and Classics at the University of Alberta, Faculty of Arts. He holds a PhD in History and Philosophy of Science from the University of Cambridge (1979). Previously, he served as Chair of the Space History Department at the Smithsonian Institution's National Air and Space Museum and held distinguished roles including Lindberg Chair of Aerospace History and McCalla Professor at the University of Alberta.
His research focuses on the history of science and technology from the late 18th century to the present, with special emphasis on astronomy, spaceflight, and the James Webb Space Telescope project. He teaches courses on World War II, the history of technology, and astronomy. Recent teaching includes HIST 296 (World War II), HIST 496 (History of Science), and HIST 696 (Advanced History of Sciences).
Awarded the 2016 Faculty of Arts Research Excellence Award, he has also been a Fellow at the National Humanities Centre. His academic contributions bridge historical scholarship with contemporary scientific endeavors.
