Robert Slifkin

Robert Slifkin is the Edith Kitzmiller Professor of the History of Fine Arts, Deputy Director, and Director of Graduate Studies at New York University’s Institute of Fine Arts. His research focuses on modern and postwar American art, emphasizing the intersection of artistic practices with broader cultural, political, and social contexts. He holds a PhD in Art History from Yale University (2007), an MA from Williams College (2002), and a BA from the University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill (1995).

Slifkin’s scholarship explores the role of art within cultural networks, redefining narratives of modernism through interdisciplinary approaches. His publications include seminal works like *Out of Time: Philip Guston and the Refiguration of Postwar American Art* (2013) and *The New Monuments and the End of Man* (2019). Current projects include a critical biography of photographer Chauncey Hare and a study on Hollywood cinema’s relationship with conceptual art.

His awards include the Hauser and Wirth Institute Fellowship (2018) and the Phillips Book Prize (2012). He teaches courses on photography, land art, and the theoretical frameworks of contemporary art, advocating for rigorous archival analysis in art historical practice.
