Smith’s research centers on modern and contemporary art and architecture, with a focus on sculpture and urbanism from the 1960s to the present. Her scholarship explores how figures like Claes Oldenburg, Robert Venturi, and Denise Scott Brown redefined public space and artistic practice. She emphasizes interdisciplinary thinking across media and investigates how art history informs contemporary cultural and urban landscapes.
Her recent publications, including her 2021 book The Accidental Possibilities of the City: Claes Oldenburg’s Urbanism in Postwar America, reveal a sustained engagement with public art, urban design, and the theoretical implications of sculptural practice. Articles and book chapters analyze the intersections of Pop Art, architecture, and urban representation, often connecting artistic innovation with broader socio-political contexts.
Smith has received research and publication support from the Graham Foundation for Advanced Studies in the Fine Arts. Her scholarly contributions include peer-reviewed journal articles, essays in edited volumes, exhibition reviews, and a biographical entry on Denise Scott Brown in a major reference work.
She has contributed to curriculum development at Agnes Scott, teaching courses such as Modern Art, Contemporary Art and Theory, History of Photography, and Monuments. She was also Faculty Coordinator for Leadership Development in the SUMMIT program (2017–2019), demonstrating her commitment to interdisciplinary education and student leadership. Her teaching draws on the Dalton Gallery and the college’s art collection, which features prominent contemporary artists.
Smith’s work is supported by grants and institutional affiliations, and she maintains an active scholarly profile with recent publications through 2022. She is not involved in part-time or emeritus roles and remains a core faculty member in her department.
