Robert Schapiro is currently Dean and the C. Hugh Friedman Professor of Law at the University of San Diego School of Law. He previously served as Dean at Emory University School of Law (2012–2017) and held academic leadership roles such as Asa Griggs Candler Professor of Law, associate vice provost, and associate dean of faculty. Schapiro is an internationally recognized scholar of federalism and constitutional law, with a focus on federal-state dynamics, judicial governance, and constitutional rights.

His research explores federalism's role in protecting constitutional rights, addressing fiscal inequality, and ensuring judicial accountability. Recent publications (2020–2024) emphasize federalism's implications for social justice, criminal procedure, and the rule of law.
He has received prestigious awards such as the Emory Williams Distinguished Teaching Award, Ben F. Johnson Faculty Excellence Award, and recognition as Professor of the Year by Emory's Black Law Students Association. Schapiro clerked for Justice John Paul Stevens (U.S. Supreme Court) and Judge Pierre N. Leval (Southern District of New York).
