Robert S. Chen is a Senior Research Scientist and Director of the Center for International Earth Science Information Network (CIESIN), a research unit of the Earth Institute at Columbia University. He manages the NASA Socioeconomic Data and Applications Center (SEDAC) and co-manages the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) Data Distribution Center. He holds ex officio membership on the Earth Institute Faculty and serves on the faculty advisory committee for the Columbia Global Center | East Asia.
Dr. Chen earned his Ph.D. in Geography from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill and his M.S. and B.S. degrees from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT).
His research focuses on data science, climate change, earth observation systems, and international data-sharing initiatives. He leads global projects such as the Group on Earth Observations (GEO) Data Sharing Working Group and previously served as Secretary-General of CODATA. He advises Creative Commons and the Oak Ridge National Laboratory’s Climate Change Science Institute.
He is active in governance roles, including membership in the U.S. National Research Council’s Board on International Scientific Organizations (BISO) and its Board on Research Data and Information (BRDI).
