معرفی
Robert Rankin is a Professor of Physics at the University of Alberta, currently in phased post-retirement status. He holds a PhD from the University of Wales (1983) and has held roles including Research Associate (1984), Senior Scientist (1990), Program Scientist (1993), and Associate Professor (1999) before becoming Full Professor in 2005. His research focuses on plasma wave dynamics in Earth’s magnetosphere, particularly ULF waves' role in energy transfer from the solar wind to the magnetosphere and ionosphere. His work integrates theory, computational models, and satellite/ground-based observations to study auroral phenomena, radiation belt dynamics, and space weather.
Education:
- BSc, University of Strathclyde, Scotland (1979)
- PhD, University of Wales (1983)
Research interests include ULF wave propagation in complex magnetic fields, wave-particle interactions, and magnetoseismology. Recent themes involve magnetosonic wave effects on solar coronal heating, radiation belt electron transport, and auroral acceleration mechanisms. His group employs global MHD models and data assimilation techniques with SuperMAG magnetometer networks. Collaborations include NASA-funded projects led by Dr. Scott Elkington (University of Colorado).
His research group currently includes three research associates, five graduate students, and two technical staff. Notable contributions include the RADICALS satellite mission concept for studying space weather-climate links and the theoretical framework for ULF wave-driven auroral acceleration.
