Dr. Robert Prucka holds the Alan Kulwicki Professorship in Motorsports Engineering at Clemson University's Department of Automotive Engineering. His research focuses on artificial intelligence and optimal control strategies for electrified powertrains in autonomous off-road vehicles, along with novel low-emission internal combustion engines.
As director of the Deep Orange vehicle-prototyping program, Dr. Prucka leads student teams designing high-performance vehicles including autonomous race cars and hybrid electric rallycross vehicles. He earned his Ph.D. in Mechanical Engineering from the University of Michigan (2008).
Research publications demonstrate strong focus on advanced engine control strategies, particularly spark-assisted compression ignition systems and opposed-piston architectures. Recent work integrates electrification solutions with combustion optimization.
Honors include:
- SAE Ralph R. Teetor Educational Award (2017)
- Murray Stokely Award for Excellence in Teaching (2015)
Professional activities include membership in SAE Combustion Committee, Specialty Equipment Market Association Emerging Trends committee, and associate editorship for the International Journal of Powertrains.
