Dr Robert Priest is the Head of the Department of History and a Senior Lecturer in Modern European History at Royal Holloway, University of London. His research focuses on cultural and intellectual history of 19th-century Europe, particularly France and Germany, with an emphasis on religion, secularization, and race/antisemitism. He holds fellowships from the Royal Historical Society and the Higher Education Academy.
Education: He studied at UCL and Oxford, followed by a Research Fellowship at Gonville and Caius College, Cambridge.
Research Interests:
- Culture Wars Over Religion: Challenging narratives of religious conflict in France and Germany.
- Popular Reception of Ideas: Analyzing how ordinary people engage with intellectual movements.
- Race and Antisemitism: Tracing historical roots of modern prejudices through case studies like Renan and Oberammergau.
Recent Projects: His upcoming book Oberammergau: The Passion Play and Its Audiences (2025) explores the play’s global impact. Past work includes The Gospel According to Renan (2015), examining religious controversy in 19th-century France.
Teaching & Leadership: As Head of Department, he prioritizes student and staff well-being. He teaches courses on European history, including modules like Europe 1900: Cultures of Conflict and Children of the Revolution?
Collaborations: Organizes the Modern French History seminar at the Institute of Historical Research and contributes to the History Workshop Journal. Recent collaborations include a British Library project on Franco-Prussian War caricatures.
