Professor Robert Pitceathly holds the Chair of Clinical Neurology and Mitochondrial Medicine at the University College London (UCL) Queen Square Institute of Neurology, leading the Department of Neuromuscular Diseases since October 2023. As Head of Research since May 2025, he co-leads the NHS England Rare Mitochondrial Disorders Service at the National Hospital for Neurology and Neurosurgery.
His academic journey includes a PhD in Mitochondrial Diseases at UCL (2014), an MSc in Genomic Medicine (Imperial College London), and medical degrees from University of Manchester (2003) and University of St Andrews (2000). He transitioned from NIHR Academic Clinical Lecturer to MRC Clinician Scientist Fellow in 2019.

His laboratory investigates mitochondrial DNA mutations, cardiolipin metabolism, and NAD+ precursor delivery systems, supported by £2.93 million MRC funding through the MitoCluster consortium. Recent awards include Lily Foundation support for genomic diagnostics.
