Andrew Lees is a Professor of Neurology at University College London (UCL) and the National Hospital for Neurology and Neurosurgery, Queen Square. He has held leadership roles including Director of the Reta Lila Weston Institute of Neurological Studies (1998–2012) and President of the Movement Disorder Society (2004–2007). His research focuses on Parkinson’s disease, movement disorders, and neuropsychiatry, with an h-index of 140 and over 23,000 citations.
Education: Qualified in medicine at Royal London Hospital Medical College (1970). Neurological training at UCL Hospitals and Queen Square, plus a year at Hôpital de la Salpêtrière, Paris.
Research Contributions: Co-developed the Queen Square Brain Bank criteria for Parkinson’s diagnosis, founded the Movement Disorder Society, and edited Movement Disorders Journal. Authored books including Ray of Hope and William Richard Gowers: Exploring the Victorian Brain.
Awards: Recipient of the Movement Disorders Research Award (2006), ABN Medal (2015), and multiple international lectureships. Named one of the world’s top neuroscientists (2024).
Professional Roles: NIHR Senior Investigator, NICE Guideline Development Group member, and honorary positions in Brazil and the UK. Served on MRC panels and global neurological organizations.
