Sir John Hardy is Chair of Molecular Biology of Neurological Disease at the Reta Lila Weston Institute of Neurological Studies, University College London. Previously, he held positions as Chief of Neurogenetics at the National Institute on Aging (2001-2007), Chair of Neuroscience at Mayo Clinic (2000), and faculty roles at University of South Florida and Imperial College London. He was knighted in 2022 for transformative contributions to understanding neurodegenerative diseases.
Education:
- PhD in Dopamine and Amino Acid Neuropharmacology, Imperial College London (1981)
- BSc, University of Leeds (1976)
Research Focus: Hardy pioneered genetic studies of Alzheimer's disease, identifying the first amyloid gene mutations. His work established the amyloid hypothesis for Alzheimer's and expanded to Parkinson's, frontotemporal dementia, and tau protein pathologies. Current research focuses on molecular mechanisms underlying neurodegenerative disorders.
Major Awards:
- Breakthrough Prize (2015) for dissecting dementia causes
- The Brain Prize (2018) for Alzheimer's research breakthroughs
- Dan David Prize (2014) for combating memory loss
- Over 20 international honors including MetLife, Potamkin, and IPSEN prizes
Leadership: Founded genetic research programs at St Mary's Hospital (1985), established neurogenetics labs at NIH and Mayo Clinic, and directs UCL's neurodegeneration research initiatives. Regularly collaborates with global consortia on dementia genetics.
