معرفی
Robert Pepperell PhD is Professor of Fine Art at Cardiff School of Art & Design, Cardiff Metropolitan University, where he leads the multidisciplinary Fovolab research group. His work bridges artistic practice with scientific and philosophical inquiry into visual perception and consciousness.
Pepperell's research focuses on the nature of conscious experience through painting, drawing, scientific experimentation, and philosophical investigation. He has developed a novel approach called 'natural perspective' based on human vision structure, which has led to innovations in 3D geometry for computer graphics that better represent embodied visual experience. His work explores the intersection between art, neuroscience, cognitive science, and computer graphics, seeking to capture not what is in the world but the experience of seeing the world from an embodied point of view.
His recent publications demonstrate a consistent trajectory examining consciousness from multiple angles - philosophical, scientific, and artistic. The research shows increasing integration of computational approaches with traditional artistic practice, particularly in understanding visual perception, aesthetic judgment, and the relationship between machine intelligence and human consciousness. His work consistently bridges theoretical inquiry with practical application across art, science, and technology domains.
As an established academic and artist, Pepperell has exhibited internationally at prestigious venues including Ars Electronica, the Barbican Gallery, Glasgow Gallery of Modern Art, the ICA, and the Millennium Dome. His scholarly contributions include influential books such as The Posthuman Condition (1995 and 2003) and The Postdigital Membrane (with Michael Punt, 2000), which have shaped discourse at the intersection of art, technology, and philosophy.
Through the Fovolab research group, Pepperell fosters interdisciplinary collaboration investigating the relationship between visual perception and consciousness. The lab's work combines artistic practice with empirical research to develop new methodologies for understanding and representing visual experience, with applications spanning computer graphics, art theory, and cognitive science.
