Ella McCartney

Ella McCartney is a Lecturer in Fine Art at the Department of Art, Goldsmiths, University of London. She is an active practitioner and researcher whose work bridges visual art, performance, and interdisciplinary studies, particularly exploring connections between language, movement, and visual representation.

McCartney's research interests span several interconnected fields:

• Visual Art and Translanguaging: Exploring the boundaries between written/spoken language and visual languages, as evidenced in her Leverhulme artist-in-residence project with Professor Zhu Hua
• Art Education and Critique: Investigating student experiences in Fine Art crits, as seen in her 2018 publication "It was just too much"
• Movement and Translation: Examining how movement functions as a form of translation between different modes of expression
• Contemporary Sculpture and Perception: Recent work focuses on encountering sculpture as image and the sensory experience of art

McCartney's publications over the past decade reveal a consistent trajectory exploring the intersections of art, language, and embodied experience. Her work demonstrates a growing interest in multimodal communication, with recent publications focusing on sculpture, visual perception, and the relationship between image and movement. The 2024 presentation "Encountering Sculpture as Image" represents her most current research direction, building on earlier work in translanguaging and visual art.

McCartney has been actively involved in numerous exhibitions and performances, including "To Act To Know To Be" (2017), "Forms of Address" (2018), and "Movement as Dialogue" (2019).
