Dr. Robert Opila is a Professor of Materials Science and Engineering at the University of Delaware and currently serves as a rotator in the Division of Materials Research at the National Science Foundation. His research focuses on interfacial phenomena, including charge transfer at interfaces, metal/polymer adhesion, and electron trap analysis in semiconductor interfaces. His work emphasizes linking chemical/morphological structure to material properties using advanced techniques like X-ray spectroscopy and inverse photoelectron spectroscopy. Key research areas include organic light-emitting diodes, photovoltaic interfaces, and semiconductor surface processing.
- Education: B.S. with Highest Departmental Distinction from University of Illinois (1975), James Franck Scholar at University of Chicago (1975-1977)
Research interests also span art conservation science, particularly analyzing cadmium yellow pigment degradation in artworks like Munch’s *The Scream* using scanning transmission electron microscopy (STEM). His work bridges materials science and cultural heritage preservation. He has pioneered atomic layer etching techniques and surface passivation strategies for semiconductor applications.
