Robert Nicholls is Professor of Climate Adaptation at the University of East Anglia and former Director of the Tyndall Centre for Climate Change Research (2019-2014). His research examines coastal vulnerabilities, particularly sea-level rise impacts, erosion, and societal adaptation strategies, with global case studies in deltaic regions (e.g., Bangladesh) and small islands (e.g., Maldives). He pioneered the DIVA model for coastal risk assessment, applied in EU Horizon 2020 projects like PROTECT and national policies including Bangladesh's Delta Plan 2100.
His work integrates coastal geomorphology, climate economics, and policy analysis, emphasizing interdisciplinary methods to address flood exposure in urban centers and infrastructure resilience. Recent publications analyze subsidence effects, multi-hazard frameworks, and migration patterns under climate scenarios.
Nicholls has contributed to five IPCC reports and co-led the World Climate Research Programme's Sea-Level Rise Grand Challenge. He holds a BSc in Geology and PhD in Civil Engineering from the University of Southampton.
