Jochen Hinkel is Head of the Adaptation and Social Learning department at the Global Climate Forum (GCF) and an External Professor at Humboldt University of Berlin's Division of Resource Economics. His research examines climate adaptation governance, coastal risk economics, and sea-level rise impacts through integrated modeling (e.g., DIVA framework) and institutional analysis. He co-develops adaptation strategies with stakeholders across scales—from local communities (e.g., German Baltic cities) to global assessments.
Hinkel leads major projects including:
- PROTECT: Projecting sea-level rise impacts from ice sheets to local implications
- CoCliCo: Developing coastal climate core services
- REST-COAST: Restoring ecosystems via river-sea connectivity
- CONMAR: Governing marine munition in German seas
His publications focus on quantifying coastal flood risks, adaptation financing, and socio-ecological tipping points. As an IPCC Lead Author and WCRP contributor, he bridges science and policy for coastal resilience.
