Dr. Robert Mills is a Lecturer in Film at the University of Southampton's Faculty of Arts and Humanities, Department of Film Studies. His academic work bridges film studies with queer theory, political activism, and experimental media practices, focusing on how marginalized communities utilize visual media for resistance and community building.
Dr. Mills' research centers on:
- Queer visual cultures and their historical development
- Contemporary critical and political theory applications to media
- Independent, underground, and experimental media cultures
- Intersections between queer activism and media production
His current research examines the history and historiography of queer activism on screen, with particular attention to media practices during the AIDS crisis (1980s-1990s). Dr. Mills is completing a monograph analyzing how oppositional sentiments transformed as they moved 'from street to screen,' while simultaneously developing new research connecting queer film history with abolitionist thought and anti-prison activism.
Dr. Mills' publications reveal consistent methodological promiscuity, blending historical research with theoretical analysis across film studies, cultural theory, and LGBTQ+ history. His work demonstrates how queer communities have utilized media forms for political expression during critical historical moments, particularly health crises and social movements.
As an active PhD supervisor, Dr. Mills currently mentors:
- Aykut Kazmaci (PhD Film)
- Konstantina Zygouri (PhD Film)
He is accepting applications from prospective doctoral students interested in queer media cultures, experimental film, and political activism. Dr. Mills is a member of the Centre for International Film Research, contributing to interdisciplinary scholarship that connects local research with global perspectives on film and media.
