Robert Michael Brain is an Associate Professor in the Department of History at the University of British Columbia (UBC), located in the Faculty of Arts. His research focuses on the history of science, technology, and medicine, alongside modern European cultural and intellectual history. He authored The Pulse of Modernism: Physiological Aesthetics in Fin-de-Siècle Europe (2015) and co-edited several volumes, including Hans Christian Ørsted and the Romantic Legacy in Science (2007). Brain has held fellowships at institutions such as the Max Planck Institute, École des Hautes Études en Sciences Sociales, and the DAAD, and curated exhibitions at the Whipple Museum of the History of Science. Prior to UBC, he taught at Harvard and Stanford Universities.
Brain holds a Ph.D. in History from UCLA, an M.A. in History of Science from the University of Wisconsin-Madison, and a B.A. in Philosophy from UC Berkeley. His research interests include the interplay between scientific thought and cultural movements, with a focus on 19th- and early 20th-century Europe. He explores themes such as empathy in science, the cultural impact of scientific instruments, and the visualization of data in modernist contexts. Brain’s work bridges disciplines, examining how scientific concepts influenced art, literature, and public perception.
His publications span over 60 articles and book chapters, addressing topics like physiological aesthetics, the history of empathy, and the role of exhibitions in disseminating scientific ideas. He co-edits the Routledge series Science, Technology, and Culture 1700–1950. Brain’s articles often analyze case studies such as the impact of Helmholtz’s graphical methods, the cultural significance of the kymograph, and the intersection of modernist art with scientific theories. His research underscores the transformative role of science in shaping cultural narratives and vice versa.
Brain has advised numerous graduate students and contributed to major academic projects, including editing special journal issues and co-curating innovative museum exhibitions. His work emphasizes interdisciplinary approaches, reflecting his commitment to understanding science as a cultural and historical phenomenon.
