معرفی
Dr Robert Maniura serves as Reader in History of Art at Birkbeck, University of London's School of Historical Studies, where he has taught since 2001. He lectures on Northern and Southern European art from the late Middle Ages through the Renaissance at both undergraduate and postgraduate levels, specializing in devotional visual culture and miraculous imagery.
Maniura earned his PhD in History of Art from the Courtauld Institute in 1998 after a prior career in financial management. His educational trajectory reflects a significant shift from industry to academia, culminating in specialized expertise in medieval and Renaissance religious art.
His research centers on the intersection of visual culture and devotion, with particular emphasis on miraculous images, pilgrimage practices, and ritual performance. Key publications include Pilgrimage to Images in the Fifteenth Century (2004) and Art and Miracle in Renaissance Tuscany (2018), which established foundational frameworks for understanding how sacred images functioned within religious communities. His current British Academy-funded project challenges conventional narratives of fifteenth-century art through expanded geographical and methodological perspectives.
Maniura's scholarly output reveals consistent thematic evolution from medieval pilgrimage studies toward broader investigations of image agency, materiality, and cross-cultural exchange. Recent works increasingly incorporate contemporary relevance, such as his 2024 analysis of Kosovo's cultural politics, demonstrating the enduring applicability of art historical methodologies to modern conflicts.
His distinguished recognition includes:
- Villa I Tatti Fellowship (Harvard University Center for Italian Renaissance Studies)
- Netherlands Inter-University Art History Institute Fellowship
- Leverhulme Trust Research Fellowship
- British Academy Mid-Career Fellowship
As an active doctoral supervisor, Maniura guides research on diverse topics including semiotic approaches to Medieval Guelders' visual culture (Ferry Lichtenberg) and fourteenth-century Italian familial patronage systems (Morag McClintock). His teaching encompasses specialized modules like Art and Devotion in Fifteenth-Century Italy and dissertation supervision, emphasizing primary source analysis and interdisciplinary methodologies.
Maniura contributes to academic infrastructure as Steering Committee member for Birkbeck's Medieval and Early Modern Worlds research center and the Vasari Research Centre, fostering collaborative scholarship in pre-modern visual culture through organized symposia and publication initiatives.
