Robert Mackenzie is a Professor of Working Life Science at Karlstad University, Sweden, and holds visiting professorships at the University of Leeds (CERIC) and the University of Manchester (Alliance Manchester Business School). He specializes in employment regulation, labor market restructuring, and migration studies. His research examines how macro-level policies intersect with micro-level workplace practices, with a focus on trade unions, occupational identity, and the impact of economic restructuring on workers.
He serves on the editorial boards of leading journals like Nordic Journal of Working Life Studies and New Technology Work and Employment. His work spans sectors such as telecommunications, steel, and construction, with a particular interest in migrant labor dynamics and the evolving nature of work. Recent research includes studies on post-redundancy career transitions, pandemic-era work norms, and algorithmic management in the gig economy.
Collaborations include international projects on labor migration, Saudi Arabia’s Nitaqat reforms, and the mediatization of work through gig apps.
