Robert M. Kalin is a Professor of Environmental Engineering for Sustainability at the University of Strathclyde, specializing in Hydrogeology and Sustainable Development Goals. He holds fellowships from the Institution of Civil Engineers (FICE), Royal Society of Chemistry (FRSC), and Geological Society of London (FGS). His career spans 30 years in environmental science and engineering, focusing on global sustainability agendas, particularly water resources management and environmental forensics.
Education: PhD (1993), MSc (1987), BSc (1983) from the University of Arizona and SUNY Cortland. He has managed research programs exceeding £20M and currently leads the Climate Justice Fund: Water Futures Programme (2011–2030) in Malawi, supporting SDG6 implementation. Past roles include Head of the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering at Strathclyde (2007–2011) and academic positions at Queen’s University Belfast (1994–2007).
Research interests include transboundary groundwater management, hydrogeological science, and sustainable remediation of contaminated land. His work encompasses capacity-building projects in over 20 countries, including Malawi, Nigeria, Thailand, and across Africa and the Middle East. He is Course Director for the world’s only Distance Learning MSc in Hydrogeology, funded by the Commonwealth Scholarships Committee.
Key awards include the Strathclyde Medal (2018) and recognition as a Chartered Environmentalist (CEnv). His expertise spans environmental forensics, water diplomacy, and policy integration, with a focus on bridging transdisciplinary gaps in environmental governance, law, and economics.
