Robert M. Groves is the Interim President and the Gerard J. Campbell, S.J. Professor in the Math and Statistics Department and Sociology Department at Georgetown University. Previously, he served as Executive Vice President and Provost at Georgetown (2012–2024), Director of the U.S. Census Bureau (2009–2012), and led the University of Michigan Survey Research Center. He holds a bachelor’s from Dartmouth College and advanced degrees in statistics and sociology from the University of Michigan, where he also earned his doctorate.
His research focuses on social cognitive influences on statistical data quality, survey methodology, and adaptive research designs. Notable contributions include work on data collection modes, survey participation dynamics, and public privacy concerns. Groves chairs the Pew Research Center Board and has authored seven books, including the influential Survey Errors and Survey Costs (1989).
He is a member of prestigious academies including the National Academy of Sciences and multiple statistical societies. His awards include recognition from the American Statistical Association and the American Academy of Arts and Sciences.
