Robert Legare Atmar

Dr. Robert L. Atmar is a Professor of Infectious Diseases at Baylor College of Medicine and holder of the John S. Dunn Research Foundation Clinical Professorship. His research advances understanding of norovirus, respiratory viruses, and vaccine efficacy, with significant contributions to COVID-19 therapeutics.

Education: MD (Baylor College of Medicine), BS (Texas A&M University).

Research: Dr. Atmar co-led the ACTT-1 trial establishing remdesivir for COVID-19 (NEJM 2020) and pioneered human norovirus cultivation using stem-cell-derived enteroids (Science 2016). His lab studies viral pathogenesis and immunity to inform vaccine design, with NIH-funded projects on norovirus transmission and heterologous booster vaccination.

Leadership: Principal Investigator for the NIH Vaccine Treatment and Evaluation Unit (VTEU), coordinating Phase I-IV trials for influenza and emerging pathogens.
