Robert Lecusay is an Associate Professor of Education and Senior Lecturer in Child and Youth Studies at Stockholm University's Department of Child and Youth Studies. He teaches in the undergraduate preschool teacher education program and serves as director of the master's program in preschool didactics. His academic work bridges teaching, research, and program leadership within early childhood education.
Dr. Lecusay's research focuses on the intersection of play, teaching, and sustainability in Swedish preschool settings. His work examines how preschool educators navigate tensions between these elements within the context of increasing 'schoolification' of early childhood education. His research interests span education for sustainability, aesthetic literacy events, social justice in preschool education, and the relationship between formal and informal learning environments.
He is actively involved in multiple research initiatives, including the Nordic research network for evidence-based, high-quality preschool for social justice and the Practice-based research in and about early childhood education and care (PraFF) group. His current projects examine how play and teaching can coexist in sustainable ways within preschool settings, with particular attention to cognitive language development and inclusive education practices.
Dr. Lecusay directs the master's program in preschool didactics while teaching courses on play, early childhood education policy (with international perspectives), and research methods. He supervises independent research projects at both undergraduate and graduate levels. His research has been supported by multiple grants including those from the Swedish Research Council, Horizon 2020, Östersjöstiftelsen, and FORMAS.
Previously, Dr. Lecusay was a doctoral student in the Interdisciplinary PhD Program in Communication & Cognitive Science and a lecturer at the University of California, San Diego's Department of Communication and Laboratory of Comparative Human Cognition. He maintains his affiliation with UCSD as a researcher at the Laboratory of Comparative Human Cognition, participating in the Regenerating CHAT project and related initiatives.
