Professor Robert Lancaster holds a Chair in Materials Science at Swansea University's Institute of Structural Materials (ISM), leading a 10-member team focused on additive manufacturing, thermo-mechanical fatigue (TMF), and small punch testing (SPT). He oversees a £2.25M grant portfolio from EPSRC, Horizon 2020, Innovate UK, and industry partners like Rolls-Royce and GKN Aerospace. His expertise spans nickel superalloys, titanium alloys, and fatigue analysis, with over 60 publications and guest-edited journal issues. He chairs major conferences, including SSTT2018, and is UK’s national expert on SPT. Currently serving on BSi and IOM3 committees, he actively contributes to national and international standards.
Research interests include miniaturised testing methodologies, additive layer manufacturing, and failure analysis. His team investigates structural integrity under extreme conditions, with applications in aerospace and energy sectors. Recent work focuses on powder recycling effects, energy density impacts, and high-entropy alloys. He supervises numerous PhD and EngD students, emphasizing additive manufacturing and material characterization.
Scientific contributions include pioneering SPT applications for additive materials and developing unique fatigue testing capabilities. His awards include Fellow of the Higher Education Academy. Grants support collaborations with industry leaders to advance materials for turbine discs, nuclear submarines, and high-performance alloys.
