Robert L. Griess Jr. serves as the John Griggs Thompson Distinguished University Professor of Mathematics at the University of Michigan, where he has maintained a distinguished faculty position since 1971. He is affiliated with the Department of Mathematics within the College of Literature, Science, and the Arts.
Professor Griess specializes in advanced algebraic structures, with research spanning finite simple groups, group extensions and cohomology, finite aspects of Lie theory and algebraic group theory, infinite dimensional groups and Lie algebras, nonassociative algebras, vertex operator algebras, and rational lattices and their isometry groups. His work bridges pure mathematics with theoretical physics, creating significant interdisciplinary connections.
Griess achieved international recognition for his 1980 construction of the Monster group, the largest of the sporadic simple groups, which represented a fundamental breakthrough in group theory and opened new connections between mathematics and theoretical physics.
