Robert Griess is the John Griggs Thompson Distinguished University Professor of Mathematics at the University of Michigan, affiliated with the Department of Mathematics within the College of Literature, Science, and the Arts (LSA). He holds a Ph.D. from the University of Chicago (1971). His research focuses on finite simple groups, vertex algebras, rational lattices, and nonassociative algebras. He is renowned for constructing the Monster group in 1980, a breakthrough linking mathematics and theoretical physics.
Key awards include election to the National Academy of Sciences (2020) and the Distinguished University Professor title (2016). His work bridges algebraic structures and geometry, with contributions to Lie theory and lattice isometry groups. Griess has advised numerous students and maintains an active role in academic leadership.
