Robert L Murphy, MD is the Executive Director of the Robert J. Havey, MD Institute for Global Health and Interim Chief of Infectious Diseases in the Department of Medicine at Northwestern University's Feinberg School of Medicine. He holds the prestigious John Philip Phair Professorship in Infectious Diseases and maintains a joint appointment as Professor in McCormick School of Engineering, reflecting his interdisciplinary approach to global health challenges.
Dr. Murphy earned his MD from Loyola University/Stritch School of Medicine in 1978, completed his Internal Medicine residency at Northwestern University's McGaw Medical Center in 1981, and finished his Infectious Diseases fellowship at the same institution in 1984. His board certification is in Internal Medicine from the American Board of Internal Medicine.
His research spans HIV infection, viral hepatitis, coronavirus-19, and antiviral drug development, with a strong emphasis on global health applications. His work bridges clinical medicine and engineering, focusing on diagnostic development for resource-limited settings. His research portfolio includes significant contributions to point-of-care technology, HIV co-infections, cervical cancer screening in HIV-positive populations, and pandemic response strategies, particularly in African settings where he has established long-term research partnerships.

As Executive Director of the Havey Institute for Global Health, Dr. Murphy leads numerous international research initiatives and mentorship programs. He serves on multiple advisory boards including the Fogarty International Center/NIH Advisory Board (2022-Present) and has chaired significant initiatives like the Co-chair, COVID-19 Vaccine and Communication and Evaluation Network (2021-2023). His editorial roles include Editor of Global Health Innovation (2018-Present) and Senior Editor of Virology for the Journal of Antimicrobial Chemotherapy (2007-Present). He has maintained a continuous leadership role as Co-Chair of the Data Management Committee for the AIDS Clinical Trials Group/NIH since 1990, demonstrating remarkable longevity and impact in the field.
Dr. Murphy directs the Havey Institute for Global Health, which coordinates Northwestern's global health research, education, and outreach efforts. The institute hosts annual Global Health Day events that bring together investigators, faculty, students, and community partners to share research and celebrate global health initiatives. His leadership extends to the Northwestern Global Health Foundation, where he serves on the Board of Directors, and to numerous scientific advisory boards for pharmaceutical companies developing treatments for infectious diseases.
