Robert L Murphy, MD is the Executive Director of the Robert J. Havey, MD Institute for Global Health and Interim Chief of Infectious Diseases in the Department of Medicine at Northwestern University's Feinberg School of Medicine. He holds the prestigious John Philip Phair Professorship in Infectious Diseases and maintains a joint appointment as Professor in McCormick School of Engineering, reflecting his interdisciplinary approach to global health challenges.
Dr. Murphy earned his MD from Loyola University/Stritch School of Medicine in 1978, completed his Internal Medicine residency at Northwestern University's McGaw Medical Center in 1981, and finished his Infectious Diseases fellowship at the same institution in 1984. His board certification is in Internal Medicine from the American Board of Internal Medicine.
His research spans HIV infection, viral hepatitis, coronavirus-19, and antiviral drug development, with a strong emphasis on global health applications. His work bridges clinical medicine and engineering, focusing on diagnostic development for resource-limited settings. He has maintained a continuous leadership role as Co-Chair of the Data Management Committee for the AIDS Clinical Trials Group/NIH since 1990, demonstrating remarkable longevity and impact in the field.
Dr. Murphy directs the Havey Institute for Global Health, which coordinates Northwestern's global health research, education, and outreach efforts.
