Robert J. Havey, MD is a Clinical Professor of Medicine and Deputy Director of the Robert J. Havey, MD Institute for Global Health at Northwestern University Feinberg School of Medicine. He has been instrumental in advancing global health initiatives through education, research, and sustainable healthcare infrastructure development.
Research Interests
The institute focuses on improving primary care in low- and middle-income countries, addressing health challenges such as infectious diseases, global oncology, cardiology, and pathogen genomics. Key projects include training local physicians in biomedical engineering, combating hypertension in India and Nigeria, and studying preventable neonatal mortality in partnership with global universities.
Education and Leadership
Dr. Havey earned his MD in 1980 and completed graduate medical education (GME) in 1981 and 1983. He co-founded the Global Health Initiative in 2008, which expanded into the fully endowed Havey Institute for Global Health, now comprising 10 centers and 500+ members.
Institutional Impact
The institute has established on-the-ground collaboration hubs, including one in Stellenbosch, South Africa, and prioritizes scalable solutions to health crises like tuberculosis, HIV, and maternal-child health disparities.
